Livingstone's first and most important major expedition in 1849-1856, during which he crossed the Kalahari Desert, discovered the source of the Upper Zambezi River in 1851, and in 1853-56 made the first west-east crossing of the continent, via the Zambezi, and discovered Victoria Falls.
