8vo. With folding engraved frontispiece, engraved portrait, 22 wood-engraved plates, one folding diagram, 2 folding engraved maps (one in rear cover pocket) & numerous illustrations. (Minor mostly marginal spotting to a few leaves.) Original cloth (recased preserving original endpapers). Provenance: Elizabeth H. Oliver (gift inscription).FIRST EDITION, second issue (with the frontispiece printed in black-and-white); Bradlow's variant 7: frontispiece and plats facing pages 66 and 225 are wood-engravings by Whymper; the extra leaf after page 8 is absent. Livingstone's first and most important major expedition in 1849-1856, during which he crossed the Kalahari Desert, discovered the source of the Upper Zambezi River in 1851, and in 1853-56 made the first west-east crossing of the continent, via the Zambezi, and discovered Victoria Falls.
