LODGE, HENRY CABOT. Three Typed Letters Signed, "H.C. Lodge," to John Hays Hammond, thanking for the gift of a pamphlet, explaining that he cannot send the manuscript of his speech delivered at Gloucester, and agreeing to send a copy of "Silver Jack." 30 March 1901: "Thank you . . . for . . . sending me a copy of Mrs. Hammond's pamphlet on the Boer War. I am very glad . . . to hear about both sides of this question. . . ."
John Hays Hammond was jailed in 1896 by the Boer government in South Africa for his involvement in the failed Jameson Raid, designed to instigate an insurrection among the immigrant workers of the region and justify an extension of British rule.
