LOUIS ASTON KNIGHT
New York/California/France, 1873-1948
Sunset over a French landscape. Signed under frame rabbet.
Oil on panel, 10.5" x 14". Framed 15.5" x 19.5".
Notes:
Louis Aston Knight was the son of the widely celebrated painter Daniel Ridgway Knight. Much like his father, he painted both in France and the United States, often capturing French peasants and the countryside. The two often painted en plein air together, and there are some similarities in their work, but Daniel Ridgway concentrated more on figure painting while Louis Aston concentrated more on landscapes. He found his favorite subjects in the waterways of Normandy, and his treatment of water in all forms -- rushing mountain torrents and placid glistening puddles -- has been widely acclaimed.
Condition Report: Although UV examination is difficult to read, it is possible that there are several small spots of paint restoration, but the painting only fluoresces in the black areas, which could be natural. Otherwise no obvious damages.

The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact Eldred's before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase. Condition reports are provided as a courtesy, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions. Important note on frames: Frames are not guaranteed to be in the same condition as they are in the item photograph. Due to handling and shipping, many frames, especially antique ones, are prone to losses. If you have questions about the condition of a frame, please contact us prior to the auction.
