LOUIS ICART, Painting from his Red Period

Oil on board painting by Louis Icart (French, 1888-1950). Executed during Icart's Red Period, the painting shows a scene of a woman retrieving a note from the hollow of a chestnut tree. The scene appears to illustrate a French story, titled La Mort Du Chataignier (The Death of the Chestnut Tree) which has been affixed to the verso of the painting. Executed in warm reds, golds and yellows, the beauty of the subject, in bright highlight, is contrasted by the ominous, darkly colored tree which holds the unreceived letter from Victor Hugo to Juliette Drouet. A beautifully executed and masterfully balanced painting, definitely an important piece from one of the artist's most intriguing and sought after periods. Stamps on verso from Atelier Louis Icart and Christie's. Sight size measures 15 1/2" x 12 1/2".
