Lot Essay
Inspired by the astronomical observations of Louis Moinet himself, the Space Mystery combines the independent manufacture’s fascination with celestial mechanics, rare extraterrestrial materials and traditional high watchmaking. At its centre is a spectacular flying tourbillon accompanied by a miniature planet orbiting around its cage, creating a poetic mechanical interpretation of the movement of heavenly bodies.
Dominating the dial at 12 o’clock is the oversized one-minute flying tourbillon, measuring an impressive 13.59 mm in diameter. Elevated above the dial, its construction creates a remarkable impression of depth, with the tourbillon appearing almost suspended in mid-air. A miniature planet revolves around the cage as it rotates, while the hand-finished mechanism is completed by Louis Moinet’s distinctive X-shaped upper bridge in blued titanium. The hours and minutes are displayed separately on an off-centred indication at 6 o’clock.
The celestial theme continues across the rich ‘Magic Blue’ dial, whose intense colour is achieved through an exclusive process developed by Louis Moinet. Particularly fascinating, this type of meteorite is known to contain organic compounds, including amino acids, further reinforcing the connection between the watch and the origins of our solar system. The 46 mm white gold case is enriched with hand engraving, also present on the lugs, and a distinctive bezel punctuated by six notches and screws. Even more remarkably, two additional extraterrestrial fragments are incorporated into the caseband on either side of the fleur-de-lys-decorated crown: one originating from the Moon and the other from Mars.
Visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, the manually wound calibre LM48 operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and provides an impressive 72-hour power reserve.
