Condition Report:
The canvas has been lined and is securely attached to a keyed wooden stretcher. There are some scattered lines of craquelure and there is an area of paint lifting, with some associated losses, in the lower left quadrant. This would benefit from consolidation.
Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals areas of fluorescence which appear to be mostly associated to the artist's pigments. However, some retouching is visible, notably:
- three small areas in the lower left quadrant;
- one small area on the lower right quadrant; and
- some intermittent strokes along the right and left framing edges.
Overall, this work presents well and is in good condition.
Presented in a decorative gilt frame.
Provenance:
Estate of Marcel and Liliane Pollack (sale: Sotheby's, New York, 1 November 1995, lot 232)
Matthiesen Gallery, London
Joey and Toby Tanenbaum, Toronto (sale: Sotheby’s, New York, 23 October 1997, lot 177)
