La Joselito. 1933.
Carmen Gomez—better known as La Joselito—is suspended in a graphic moment of flamenco dancing to announce her performance at the Salle Pleyel concert hall in Paris. Born in 1906, Gomez was practically destined to be a dancer; her grandmother, La Berenguera, was a legend of classical Spanish dance. Similarly, Gomez became an icon of the "golden age" of flamenco. The German record producer Claus Schreiner wrote, "La Joselito has the body of a woman born into the world of flamenco at the start of this century. Spurning seductiveness, she bewitches her audiences not with her body, but by focusing their total attention on the art itself" (Flamenco, p. 97).
