"In 1927, [Baker] made her film debut in the silent picture 'La Sirène des Tropiques,' a romantic comedy that was dismissed by the critics, but relished by the public. Baker played the part of Papitou, an island girl who falls in love with a visiting Frenchman who chooses to remain faithful to his girlfriend back home. She bursts onto the screen with an extravagantly outrageous routine that is half vamp, have hyperactive child. This appearance required little more of her than to dance, but as her fame expanded, so too did her ambition" (Separate Cinema/100 Years, p. 42). While most other promotions show Baker grinning in dramatic costuming, Péron, the prolific posterist of French cinéma, opted to reveal Baker's elegant vulnerability.
