[ translate ]

Oil on panel. Inscribed “Jozef Israels” lower right. Blue circular stamp with central emblem to the reverse, not securely legible. Half-length figure of a lady in historicising dress with cap and ruff, resting her head on her right hand, behind a stone parapet. Paint layer with craquelure and isolated small losses; UV examination reveals isolated retouching, particularly in the area of the ruff. Reverse with numerous small woodworm exit holes. Frame with rubbing and minor losses to the finish. Image approx. 35 × 27 cm, frame 50 × 42 cm. Israels was a Dutch painter who initially produced Romantic history paintings and, from around 1855 onwards, increasingly focused on depictions of the lives of fishermen and peasants.
