Lajos Markos (Hungarian/American, 1917-1993) Heroes of Texas Portraits (12 works) Oil on canvas, each 50 x 30 inches (127 x 76.2 cm) (each) Each signed lower right: L. Markos Each signed on the reverse: L. Markos INCLUDES: Sam Houston, Stephen Fuller Austin, Davie Crockett, James Bowie, William Barret Travis, Benjamin Rush Milam, Lorenzo de Zavala, Chief Bowles, Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar, Sidney Sherman, James Walker Fannin Jr., and Thomas Jefferson Rusk. Born in Hungary where he was formally trained at the Royal Academy in Budapest, Lajos Markos came to the United States following World War II and established himself as a portrait painter in New York. In the 1960s he moved to Texas and began to paint the western scenes for which he is most famous today. With its realistically rendered figures and dramatic contrast of light and shadow, Red River is a superb example of Markos' masterful painting style.
