After the 1929 crisis, the most prominent car manufacturers were imposed to produce economic cars with lower displacement and maintenance costs. The Lancia Aprilia was born. It was named after the city founded during Fascism in the Pontine Marshes (Lazio region) . This model was Vincenzo Lancia’s latest great creation: in fact, he died few days after the official launch of the car. Although being a mid-range car, the Aprilia boasted state-of-the-art features, such as the main body, independent wheels and aluminium single block. Other car manufacturers adopted this kind of solutions only much later. Moreover, the characteristic “narrow-V” 4-cylinder engine delivered 48 hp and a top speed reaching 125 km/h, much higher then its category competitors. The bodywork was specifically designed in function of aerodynamics, obtaining excellent results without sacrificing comfort: a characteristic trait in Lancia. The Aprilia was considered the “typical car” of the 1950s and 60s, with 20-30 years in advance.
