Large 15th C. Thai Sawankhalok Lidded Jar, ex-Museum

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sawankhalok (Sawankalok), ca. 15th century CE. A beautiful, lidded vessel that is hand-built and glazed with hues of light blue and brown-green. The ring base has traces of a circular encrustation indicating the jar was fired on a tubular column in the kiln. The exterior walls are slightly ribbed and painted with a band of trailing vegetal motifs. The lid continues the ribbed surface and patterns. A spherical knob is set in the center, and the lid rests flush against the protruding lip of the body. The interior basin is also glazed a speckled blue color. An elegant and lovely jar! Size: 6.5" W x 5.5" H (16.5 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: ex Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998

Condition Report: Intact and very good. Stable pressure fissure on lid. Chips to ring base and nicks to pigments. Some areas of fading and discoloration. Nice craquelure throughout.
