Large 19th C. Chinese Stone Chop Stamp

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A large carved soapstone seal, made from two pieces of soapstone almost seamlessly fitted together, with a Fu dog and three puppies ornately carved atop its block-like body; the underside features deeply incised characters with red pigment. The sides of the block are also carved with natural scenes and Chinese charcters. Size: 4.1" W x 5.95" H (10.4 cm x 15.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Ventura County, California, USA collection, purchased prior to 2010 from USA estate

Condition Report: Although the piece appears to be repaired along the back of the Fu dog's body, it is actually made from two pieces. Tiny chips, nicks, and scratches on surface and wear on underside from use. Light deposits, especially in lower profile areas.
