Large Byzantine bronze reliquary (encolpion cross)

A large Byzantine bronze reliquary (encolpion cross), c. 8th - 11th Century AD, both halves well-preserved. One side depicts Christ with arms outstretched, a small cross above his head and the opposite side depicts the Virgin Mother with arms upraised Orans, both nimbate and wearing robes. The top suspension loop still connected with the original ancient wire. H: 3 1/2 in (8.5 cm). A nice example with a coppery brown patina. Nicely mounted in a large square magnetic frame which can easily be opened and closed. Ex Los Angeles private collection.
