Large Chancay Textile Fragment w/ Birds

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A beautiful and sizable textile fragment composed of tightly-woven natural cotton fibers in hues of cream, beige, fuchsia, magenta, and jet. The textile is formed from two separate panels which are sewn together in the center and display matching iconographical motifs. The main body displays several diagonal strips filled with abstract avian figures, and smaller parallel strips - either above or below the birds - have wave-form motifs in red-and-yellow or black-and-pink colors. The lower body has a pink-and-red register of similar avian figures enclosed by bands of black-and-cream waves, and an ochre-yellow fringe panel hangs from the bottom. Mounted atop a fabric-lined frame. Size (textile): 27.75" W x 23.25" H (70.5 cm x 59.1 cm); size (frame): 33" W x 30" H (83.8 cm x 76.2 cm).

Condition Report: This is a fragment of a larger textile object. Fraying and losses to some areas of interior and peripheral threading, with fading and staining to original pigmentation, and light creasing in some areas. Colors and iconography are still clear and vibrant.
