Large Coptic limestone funerary stela depicting a youth
A large Coptic limestone funerary stela depicting a youth, c. 4th - 5th Century AD, kneeling upon a soft chair or pillow within a domed niche supported by Corinthian columns. His hair is cropped short with handsome well-defined features and wears a tunic with necklace featuring pendants along the top of his chest. His left hand holds an owl (head now lost) and right a bunch of grapes surmounted by a dove. The piece is a great example of funerary sculpture of the period depicting an upper class youth apparently lost before her could enter manhood. 22 x 11 1/2 x 7 3/4 in (55.8 x 29.2 x 19.6 cm).
