Large Fossilized Walrus Tusk Scrimshaw — Bering Sea Wildlife & Umiak Voyage Scenes

A large fossilized walrus tusk scrimshaw depicting Bering Sea wildlife and umiak voyage scenes across an approximately 27-inch longitudinal section. Prominent orcas, rendered in bold black silhouettes, anchor the panorama. A paddled umiak approaches the whales, followed by a pod of resting walruses and two polar bears among angular ice formations. A group of seabirds flies overhead, linking the scenes along the sweeping curve. Fine hatching in the clothing and animals contrasts with the dark orcas, giving the engraving a clear, lively rhythm. Signed “Kuvooshuk” beneath the polar bears.

The polished face retains warm brown streaks within the cream-colored walrus tusk, framed by the darker, weathered outer surface of the tusk. Near the pointed end, an inscription reads “Bearing Sea / St. Lawrence Isl. / Gambell Alaska,” preserving the artist's spelling. The reverse has four pale circular plugs or insets.

The polished front contrasts with the more heavily weathered reverse and broad end. Longitudinal checks and hairline cracks are present, together with irregular edges. Measures approximately 27 inches long × 2.75 inches wide × 1.5 inches deep.

Auction Estimate: $500–$800.
