Large Orthocone Cephalopod Fossil Plate
Width: Approximately 11.5 inches across the widest point. Height: Approximately 8 inches from the bottom of the wood base to the top of the stone slab. Fossil size: Individual cephalopod fossils range in length from approximately 3 inches to 8 inches. This lot consists of a large, fossiliferous limestone plate containing multiple orthocone cephalopod fossils, likely of the genus Orthoceras. The specimen features numerous straight-shelled nautiloids embedded in a dark, charcoal-gray matrix. The upper surfaces of the fossils have been professionally prepared and polished to a high-gloss black finish, revealing the intricate internal white septa (chamber walls) and siphuncles. The surrounding matrix is left with a matte, textured finish to provide visual contrast. The fossils are arranged in a radiating, overlapping pattern across the face of the slab. The reverse side remains in its natural, unpolished state, showing various smaller fossil fragments and the raw texture of the sedimentary rock. The specimen is supported by an unfinished, rectangular wooden base.
