Large Pre-Columbian Style Colima Comala Hollow Effigy Shaman Figure Vessel Redware
This striking terracotta effigy vessel is crafted in the distinctive Pre-Columbian Comala style native to the West Mexican state of Colima, featuring a hollow interior designed to hold ceremonial liquids. The redware container depicts a seated horned shaman or chief in a wide-legged, dignified posture, meticulously detailed with iconic shoulder protrusions, pierced earlobes, and a functional pouring aperture located on the back of the conical headdress. The entire surface is finished in a burnished red clay slip heavily mottled with dense, dark manganese-oxide style spotting to replicate the natural subterranean oxidation found on ancient artifacts recovered from regional shaft tombs.
Condition
The piece remains in good vintage structure with intact limbs and features, showing only light superficial scuffs and minor cosmetic slip wear consistent with its age.
