Large Qing Panoramic Chinese Scroll Painting

Very Long Chinese Qing Dynasty panoramic scroll painting on paper, rendered in watercolor, ink and gouache. Depicts multiple figures in a landscape setting engaging in various activities including two figures in a boat, two males carrying sticks and a hoe, two young boys with a cow or bull, and two men counting or playing a board game visible through an opening in an architectural space, with a mountain and forest landscape in the background. Chinese inscription in the upper center. The whole rendered in calligraphic brushstrokes. Possible signature in Chinese characters to scroll handle. Mounted to an extremely long beige silk brocade with laid paper backing. Image: 67"L (5 ft 7 in) x 14 1/4" W. Overall: 18 feet long x 16 1/2" W. Metric measurements: Image - 170 cm x 36 cm. Overall - 548 cm x 42 cm. 19th century or earlier.

The collection of the late Fount and Ida Smothers, Thompson's Station, Tennessee, acquired when they visited China as part of a US-sponsored cultural exchange delegation of architects in the early 1970s.
Condition Report: Scattered staining and discoloration, overall toning to paper, some minor tearing to paper backing, and scattered foxing.
