A large branch of red coral from Alghero, Sardinia.
This variety of coral (corallium rubrum) is among the most valuable in the world and as well as for collection, it is often purchased for the creation of jewellery.
For this purpose, as in the case of this specimen, very thick branches are chosen which give the possibility of obtaining large portions of coral to be able to work.
Finding such large and well-preserved branches is really difficult, which makes this specimen a valuable collector's item.
