Large Victorian Berlin Wool Work Needlepoint Pastoral Scene ...
Large Victorian Berlin Wool Work Needlepoint Pastoral Scene Framed.
A large Victorian Berlin wool work needlepoint tapestry, executed in Great Britain, dating from the mid-to-late 19th century. The composition is worked on a fine mesh canvas in petit point or tent stitch, utilising a palette of wool and possibly silk threads. The central figurative scene depicts three women and a child in European folk or pastoral attire, gathered around a wooden pump or cistern. The figures are dressed in traditional bodices, full skirts, and aprons, set against a background featuring a stylised tree and shrubbery. The needlework is mounted behind glass in a composite period frame, featuring a broad gilt-finish inner slip and a dark stained wooden outer moulding. The reverse is finished with a green fabric backing, which exhibits significant fading and a visible circular aperture near the lower edge.
Width: Approximately 60.5 cm.
Height: Approximately 59.5 cm.
More Information
The needlework canvas shows significant overall darkening and uneven brown foxing throughout the background and central scene (photo 1). Some fading is evident to the lighter flesh tones and the green fabric backing on the reverse is heavily faded and worn (photo 7). The gilt inner slip shows surface oxidation, tarnishing, and small losses to the finish (photo 6). The outer wooden frame has minor scuffs and age-related wear to the corners and edges (photo 1).
