Large example of Roman bronze Aes Formatum
A large example of Roman bronze Aes Formatum, 5th - 4th Century BC, which was a proto-currency used in the Italian peninsula before the widespread use of coinage in the area. It is later than the aes Rude. Greece at the time used a silver standard for its currency but in Italy bronze was the standard and these unworked lumps of bronze served to facilitate trade and eventually became standardized as aes signatum and then aes grave which are regarded as the first Roman true coinage. A nicely patinated example weighing 132.85 grams and measuring 4 x 4.3 x 2.4 cm. Ex Los Angeles private collection.
