Large wooden eucharist chest, covered in silver and damasked silk. Colonial School. Peru or Mexico. 17th century.

Impressive silver-smithing, the ark is adorned on all sides with silver reliefs affixed to the damasked silk. It has a skirting border, decorated with small angels and flowers, at the edge of each face. The front of the upper lid is decorated with embossed silver depicting the instruments of the Passion of Christ, or “Arma Christi”. The front part folds back and is magnificently decorated with embossed and chased silver depicting two praying angels flanking a holy chalice. The interior is wooden and gilded, forming small pyramid shapes.
