Late 19th C. Australian Wooden Boomerang

Oceania, Central Australia, Aboriginal peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden boomerang meant to be thrown during a hunt rather than used for display. The highly burnished airfoil body is slightly curved and tapers at both ends, and the top is decorated with black-and-red motifs. Aboriginals made tools and airfoil weaponry from a variety of different woods known for their high density, heavy weight, and sturdy construction. Size: 18.3" L x 1.875" W (46.5 cm x 4.8 cm)
