Late 19th C. Nepalese Shell Trumpet

Central Asia, Himalayan region, Nepal, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely conch shell trumpet known as a Sankha with a spiraling form and a petite mouthpiece on the top. A shell trumpet like this example is a powerful object in Nepalese and Tibetan Buddhism that is used to call monks to prayer, to summon benevolent spirits, and to participate in ceremonial rituals. This trumpet produces a rather noteworthy sound when played correctly. Size: 5.3" L x 3.2" W (13.5 cm x 8.1 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in June 2006; ex-private Altpoella, Austria collection, acquired in Nepal

Condition Report: Minor nicks and abrasions to body and area surrounding mouthpiece, with extensive but shallow pitting, and darkening to some surfaces, otherwise intact and very good. Light patina throughout. Trumpet produces low-pitched but loud sound when played.
