Late 19th C. Nukuoro Atoll Wooden Outrigger Canoe Model
Oceania, Micronesia, Nukuoro Atoll, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautifully carved wooden model of an outrigger canoe with a sharply angled underside, high walls with several pierced holes with wooden rods inserted for narrow seats. Three central boom arms bear a lateral stabilizer float tied to the outsides, an additional lateral rod fastened near the center, and a tightly grouped set of shorter rods that form an intermediate-sized fishing platform. Canoe models like this example were created to visualize future design improvements while using minimal materials. Size: 20.75" L x 9.6" W (52.7 cm x 24.4 cm)
