Roberts B14], folio, 1920.

⁂ One of a small number of typescripts known; this version with D.H. Lawrence's autograph corrections, but without Lawrence's celebrated Introduction to the work.

Maurice Magnus, a one time manager of Isidora Duncan served in the French Foreign Legion in 1916-17 and wrote Dregs as an exposé of the cruel life of a legionnaire. Lawrence met Magnus in Florence in 1919, and after the latter's suicide in 1920, to escape arrest for debt, agreed to write an introductory memoir for the book. In the introduction Lawrence's frank and forthright criticism of Magnus's character aroused a hostile reaction from Norman Douglas, a fellow friend of Magnus.
