Augustus Edwin John, (1878-1961) was a Welsh painter, draughtsman, and etcher. For a short time around 1910, he was an important exponent of Post-Impressionism in the United Kingdom. He was celebrated first for his brilliant figure drawings, and then for a new technique of oil sketching. His work was favorably compared in London with that of Gauguin and Matisse. By the 1920s John was Britain's leading portrait painter.

Eric Henri Kennington (1888-1960) was an English sculptor, artist and illustrator, and an official war artist participating in both World Wars. He also regarded himself chiefly as a sculptor, creating a number of memorials, including one to his friend T.E. Lawrence. He produced the illustrations for Lawrence's "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom". He was one of the six pallbearers at Lawrence's funeral in 1935. Kennington also created many pastel portraits and lithographs.
