Le Caire, Kees van Dongen

[ translate ]

Property from a Private Collection, Europe
Kees van Dongen
1877 - 1968
Le Caire

signed van Dongen. (lower centre)
oil on canvas
100 by 81cm., 39¼ by 31⅞in.
Framed: 125 by 105.5cm., 49¼ by 41½in.
Painted circa 1928.

This work will be included in the forthcoming van Dongen Digital Catalogue Raisonné, currently being prepared under the sponsorship of the Wildenstein Plattner Institute, Inc.

Condition Report:
The canvas is lined. Inspection under UV light reveals a thick varnish through which the UV light cannot fully penetrate but there are possible small spots of retouching to the upper part of the right edge. There is some paint shrinkage to some of the black pigments and some fine lines of craquelure, slightly raised in some places. There are a few scattered tiny paint losses and a small protrusion close to the upper part of the right edge, relating to a historic impact from behind. This work is in overall fairly good condition.

Provenance:
Mme. Estrella Boissevain, Paris and Mexico (probably a gift from the artist by circa 1932)
Sheila Madigan Boissevain, Málaga (by descent from the above. Sold: Christie's, London, 29th November 1988, lot 183)
Private Collection, Europe (purchased at the above sale)
Thence by descent to the present owners
