Two parts in 1 vol., both in first edition. With engraved title, 89 (2 double-page; of 102) col. engr. plates partly heightened with gold and 1 engr. music plate. The plates are based on paintings in the collection of the Marquis de Ferriol, Fench ambassador to the Porte, who commissioned J. B. van Mour to paint one hundred pictures of different officials and races in their costumes."This publication certainly contained the most popular and influential illustrations of Turkish dress to date. Its use as a source book was wide-spread" (Blackmer). - Light browning and some staining in places, plates with some mainly marginal soiling and foxing. Marginal fraying and tears to engr. title rep., 6 plates with rep. marginal tear (1 just into image), slight creases to a few plates. Pl. 14 possibly supplemented from another copy (smaller in size). "The conflict of title page dates which sometimes causes confusion is explained by the decision to add text to the work, which appeared originally in 1714 with an engraved title only and 100 plates. The text, with printed title dated 1715 and 2 supplementary double-page plates, was issued later with the remaining unsold plates.
