\Artist: Le Maire
Technique: Etching\Signature: Not signed
Original etching on copper matrix; in the middle, title and legend on the rules of the game; around the title, 56 numbered boxes with extensive legends in French on the history of ancient Rome; on the plate, under the lower right edge, indication of the royal privilege. To the inner corners, on the title table and a few other boxes, various engraved friezes with rocaille-style decorations, trophies, musical instruments, small landscapes and a medallion with human profile. The work, rare and interesting, is a sheet intended to be used as a board on which to practice a game with tokens and dice, similar to today's Chutes and Ladders. . The press, as is made clear in the title, has a didactic intent, and is intended to pleasantly instruct young people on Roman history from Romulus to Constantine the Great. The captions of the boxes, illustrating the kings of Rome, the emperors and other historical periods of Roman history, were compiled by Le Maire, professor of history and geography. Other similar plates, with playful and at the same time didactic purpose, were produced between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries in the renowned Rue Saint-Jacques in Paris, where many of the so-called "populaire imagerie" were based. Similar plates dedicated to learning sacred history or geography are also known. In good condition, contained even browning.
