Presentation copy, inscribed to front endpaper verso: "The Right Hon. the Sidney Herbert M.P., from the author", and "only 100 copies printed". Sidney Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Lea (1810-1861) was Secretary at War under Robert Peel in 1845 and at the War Office during the Crimean War. He was a friend and confidant of Florence Nightingale.
Scarce. The British Library copy entry states this is one of 90 copies printed, the inscription states 100 were printed. Denis Le Marchant's publication of the memoirs of his father Major-General John Gaspard Le Marchant, one of the finest of all cavalry commanders, his illustrious military career and great legacy.
