Le Sage, Gil Blas, 4vol. in 1 Smollett Ed. 1791, Stothard Engravings

"The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillane", by Le Sage, translated from the French by Dr. Smollett; complete four volumes in one, Rococo style engraved plates by Stothard, published by Harrison, London in 1791 ['MDCCXCI"]. The engravings are dated "Published as the Act directs by Harrison & Co. June 6th, 1781".

Leather hard cover, [some wear and leather aging], marbled endpapers, 5" x 8.1/2", 402 pages, all 9 plates are present, a little soiling and wear, very good condition.

Thomas Stothard [1755-1834] was a painter, designer, and book illustrator who enjoyed a prolific career. He preferred to paint small-scale historical paintings. Some of his works were more monumental, including his decorative staircase at Burghley House and the dome of the Advocates' Library in Edinburgh. As an illustrator, he focused on depicting English novels and poetry.
