LOT 0434

Lebanon County PA Watercolor Fraktur, 1840

[ translate ]

A dated 1840 hand-drawn Watercolor Fraktur on paper from Lebanon County, Pennsylvania with 2 Angels and 2 birds. Hand-written lettering is all in German but Lebanon and Pennsylvania are easily identified. The Angels, with blue wings, bibs and long flowing dresses are facing each other, one is holding a wreath and the other has a dove perched on her hand. The blue and orange birds toward the bottom are facing a very large tulip. The 1840 date is in the upper right and there is also an 1838 date just above it. The whole piece is quite colorful and definitely legible if you know German (which obviously I do not!). It measures 9 ¼" x 11 ½" and is framed in a very nice, old wooden frame 13 ¼" x 15", which is quite possibly the original frame.; The Fraktur is in very fine condition. I believe it to be laid down on another piece of paper and there is some light, overall toning, but there are no stains. There are a couple of very tiny edge splits, less than ¼" and only impacting undecorated areas and there appears to be a thin sliver off the top left edge, again not affecting the lettering or the decoration (remember, please, that this paper is nearly 200 years old and probably wasn’t high quality stock to begin with); there is also a very faint crease (fold) where the paper had been folded at some point in the distant past. If anyone can translate the text or recognizes the artist, I would appreciate knowing.
