Hard boards, original publisher's cloth, gold lettering on spines [sporadic cloth wear: see photos], 5" x 7.1/4"; 468 + 407 pages including Index at the end of the second volume, very good condition.

The two-volume History of European Morals (1869, revised 1877), explores the declining sense of the miraculous, the aesthetic expressions of religious belief, and the complex relationship of society and morality. Pervading it was a desire to show the "natural causes" underlying the prevalence of certain theological and moral beliefs.

William Edward Hartpole Lecky (1838-1903), Irish historian of rationalism and European morals whose study of Georgian England became a classic. Lecky was one of the foremost political theorists of the 19th century. He also wrote a number of seminal histories of Europe, including a comprehensive study of European culture during the Middle Ages.
