Lee Mullican (American, 1919-1998), Jam Passage, 1965 Lithograph

[ translate ]

Lee Mullican (American, 1919–1998) was an Oklahoma-born California painter and printmaker associated with the Dynaton group, a short-lived but influential San Francisco circle formed with Gordon Onslow Ford and Wolfgang Paalen. His work combined abstraction, pattern, nature, mapping, Surrealist automatism, and spiritual interests, with James Cohan noting that his art developed apart from the more heroic gesture of East Coast Abstract Expressionism. His work is held in major collections including SFMOMA, the Hammer Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, LACMA, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Jam Passage, 1965, is a lithograph printed in black from an aluminum plate on white Arches wove paper by Bernard Bleha and published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles. The regular edition comprised 20 impressions, with nine additional Tamarind impressions. The composition fills nearly the entire sheet with an interlocking field of rounded, fan-like forms joined by slender lines, loops, small circles, and dark rectangular accents. Radiating graphite textures give the forms a sense of rotation, while two densely worked circular configurations interrupt the otherwise continuous pattern near the upper center and lower right. Inscribed in graphite “Tamarind Imp.” along the lower edge and signed “Lee Mullican” lower right, indicating one of the nine impressions retained by Tamarind outside the numbered edition of 20. The Tamarind Workshop and Bernard Bleha blindstamps appear in the lower margin. Verso inscribed “1201 / #6229 Guild.” Sheet measures approximately 18 x 13.875 inches. Overall good appearance. Light toning with minor handling and deckled sheet edges; two old tape hinges remain at the upper verso. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
