About the artist:
Leendert (Leo) Gestel trained at the National Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam. Initially he is influenced by the neo-impressionists and pointillists in France. From 1912 he experiments with cubism, where his characteristic cubist works were created in Mallorca in 1914.

Immediately after the outbreak of the First World War, he travels to the Belgian border to draw refugees there. In 1916, these drawings, together with lithographs and postcards, were sold by the artist, the proceeds of which were donated to the refugee reception committee.

His work can be viewed in the following museums, among others:

- Art Museum, The Hague
- Centraal Museum, Utrecht
- Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven
