Lenkoran
Late 19th century, 275 x 137 cm, South Caucasus, Karabagh region
The field design of giant red-ground palmettes outlined in white and enclosing hooked vines, with blue horizontal cartouches inserted between them, is drawn in the characteristic Lenkoran style. It goes back to older Caucasian silk embroideries. Two of the large devices are seen in full whereas a third is only just visible, being truncated by the upper horizontal border. Aside from Lenkoran, this distinctive design was also widespread in the Karabagh region and in North West Persia. The respective provenance of such rugs can be ascertained by means of their differences in structure. In this example, the narrow white-ground main border consists of reciprocal trefoils decorated with arrowheads. – The corroded brown sections are partially repiled, a number of restored areas, good overall condition.
