Leo Egli (American, 1892-1966) Buddies Again?, Ohio State Journal newspaper cartoon, 1937 India ink on heavyweight paper 15-1/2 x 12 inches (39.4 x 30.5 cm) (image) Signed and dated lower right: Egli '37 This handsome original cartoon by Leo Egli was published in the Ohio State Journal two weeks after a major radio address by John L. Lewis, leader of the United Mine Workers, titled "The Rights of Labor." Here FDR strolls outside the White House with his arm around Lewis' shoulder, both men wearing Cheshire Cat grins. 1937 was a peak year for labor strikes in the US, and at times FDR expressed dissatisfaction with both management and unions. Nonetheless, it was common knowledge that the President backed the unions and their right to organize and strike for better wages and improved working conditions. Organized labor was a significant segment of the Democratic Party coalition from the 1930s through the 1960s. Leo Iven Egli was the lead editorial cartoonist of the Ohio State Journal from 1937 to 1947, and his cartoons appeared in many other American newspapers. He had previously worked at the Wichita Eagle (Kansas) from 1932 to 1937. The artist's Leo the Lion Cub, a regular feature of his work, appears at lower left. Included is the printed cartoon bearing the date of publication clipped from the Ohio State Journal newspaper.
