Leo Egli (American, 1892-1966) Silent!, Ohio State Journal newspaper cartoon, 1939 India ink on heavyweight paper 15-1x2 x 12 inches (39.4 x 30.5 cm) (image) Signed and dated lower right: Egli '39 In 1939-1940 Franklin D. Roosevelt was as Silent! as the Sphinx regarding seeking a third term as President of the United States. It was a highly controversial decision, for it was George Washington who established the precedent that two terms would be the most for any man. Roosevelt kept quiet about his plans yet worked hard behind the scenes to make certain that the Democratic Party nominated him again in 1940, without his openly asking for it. This is a striking political cartoon by Leo Iven Egli that blends a fine portrait of FDR with elements of ancient Egypt and Alfred "Alf" Landon's plea that the President "tell the country categorically he does not want a third term and would refuse the nomination if offered him." Fat chance. Landon was governor of Kansas from 1933 to 1937 and the Republican candidate who opposed FDR in the 1936 election. He lost in a landslide. Leo Iven Egli was the lead editorial cartoonist of the Ohio State Journal from 1937 to 1947, and his cartoons appeared in many other American newspapers. He had previously worked at the Wichita Eagle (Kansas) from 1932 to 1937. The artist's Leo the Lion Cub, a regular feature of his work, appears above his signature. Included is the printed cartoon bearing the date of publication clipped from the Ohio State Journal newspaper.
