Leo Egli (American, 1892-1966) We Planned It That Way and Spurned!, Ohio State Journal newspaper cartoons (two works), 1938-1939 India ink, lithographic crayon, and gouache on heavyweight paper 13-1x4 x 10 inches (33.7 x 25.4 cm) (We Planned It That Way, image) 13-1x2 x 10-1x2 inches (34.3 x 26.7 cm) (Spurned!, image) Each signed in lower region: Egli '38 ; Egli '39 Leo Iven Egli was the lead editorial cartoonist of the Ohio State Journal from 1937 to 1947, and his cartoons appeared in many other American newspapers. He had previously worked at the Wichita Eagle (Kansas) from 1932 to 1937. The artist's Leo the Lion Cub, a regular feature of his work, appears above his signature and at center bottom. Two originals by Leo Egli were published in the Ohio State Journal and reflect domestic issues facing President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938 and 1939. We Planned It That Way appeared in the June 7, 1938, edition and called into question the intent and effectiveness of FDR's "billions spent" in New Deal programs. Unemployment remained high, "U.S. Industries" were still mired in the Depression economy. It looked to skeptics as if the only ones enjoying prosperity were the "New Dealers" themselves (aka bureaucrats and government employees), who are portrayed speeding by in a nice big car with the President at the wheel. Spurned! was published on July 18, 1939, and features a tearful James "Big Jim" Farley, President Franklin D. Roosevelt's close advisor and manager of his gubernatorial and 1932 and 1936 presidential campaigns. He was FDR's Postmaster General in the first term, yet by the second term he had been sidelined in the changing political environment. In 1940 he broke with the President, actively campaigned to prevent a third term, and sought the Democratic Party nomination himself. Paul McNutt, John M. Carmody and Jesse H. Jones were ranked high in the administration. (image size: 13.5" x 10.5") Included is the printed Spurned! cartoon with the date of publication clipped from the Ohio State Journal newspaper. "Ohio State Journal • Tues • June 7, 1938" is written in the bottom margin of We Planned It That Way.
