Leon Underwood, British 1890-1975 – Kneeling Nude, 1936; pencil and watercolour on paper, signed and dated lower right ‘Leon 36’, 53 x 34.2 cm (ARR) Provenance: Neffe-Degandt, London; private collection Exhibited: London, Wolseley Fine Arts, ‘Pure Plastic Rhythm: Leon Underwood 1890-1975’, 20 January - 7 February 1993, no.37 (according to the label affixed to the reverse of the frame) Leon Underwood was a highly significant artist and teacher, influencing an entire generation of students at his Brook Green School of Art in the 1920s, including Henry Moore, Gertrude Hermes and Eileen Agar. This work demonstrates his sculptural approach to line and highly modern depiction of form. His works are in collections including The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, British Council Collection, London and Brooklyn Museum, New York. In 2015, Pallant House Gallery, Chichester held a retrospective on the artist, ‘Leon Underwood: Figure and Rhythm’.
