We are grateful to Prof. Peter Jánosi for the scientific assistance. This work was created when Leopold Carl Müller was staying in Weißenkirchen. It was displayed at the Vienna World’s Fair in 1873 to great acclaim. The artist is primarily known for his numerous oriental-style depictions of Egypt, a country to which he travelled regularly from 1874 onwards, and which gave him the soubriquet of ‘Orient Müller’.
