BIOGRAPHY:
Leopold Levy was born in Paris September 5, 1882. He failed the entrance examination to the Beaux-Arts de Paris, but regularly frequented the Louvre Museum. He is the friend of Charles Edmond Kayser, Andre Derain and Henri Verge-Sarrat. He worked from 1936 to 1949 in Istanbul where he directed the painting department of the School of Fine Arts, a city from which he brought back painted landscapes and portraits.Under the pseudonym of Leopold-Levy, he is the author of numerous etchings and participates in the engraved album of independent painters and engravers published by Albert Morance in 1925. His edition of De la nature (De rerum natura) by Lucrece (Paris, 1934), illustrated with 41 original etchings, is recognized as one of the most beautiful artist's books. Leopold Levy died December 12, 1966 at the Kremlin-Bicetre.
