John Steinbeck hand writes his response on bottom to his secretary. Janet: Please tell her that I have gone to work and also have retired for the time being from the picture rachet until I can grow some new skin burned off from the flash bulbs. It is a wonderful picture of Carl though. This also includes Editta Shermans January 14th 1963 response of disappointment and says that he may keep the photo of Carl as a gift. John Steinbeck once again hand writes his response, "Tell her we cant keep the Sandburg since we arent complying. Tell her I am working. Provenance: From the Estate of John and Elaine Steinbeck
