Letters of Junius, 1st American Edition, 1795

"The Letters of Junius. Complete in One Volume. With a Copious Index, Anonymous" ("Junius"), published by Robert Campbell, Philadelphia, First American Edition with MDCCXCV [1795] imprinted on the bottom of the title page.

This book was very popular in the last decades of the 18th century through the 1820s due to the author's literary and satirical skills and the mystery of his identity.

This celebrated series of letters, the masterpieces of lampooning, derision and irony appeared pseudonymously in the columns of the "Public Advertiser" between 1769 and 1772. Junius's letters poured scorn on leading politicians of the day and did not spare even King George III. The identity of their author has never been proven beyond doubt, although detailed references to the higher affairs of state strongly suggests that Sir Philip Francis, clerk to the War Office between 1762 and 1772, was behind them, although the printer denied it.
