[Engelbach (Lewis) - Rowlandson (Thomas)] Naples and the campagna felice. In a series of letters, addressed to a friend in England, in 1802. London, R. Ackermann, 1815. 1 quarto volume (23. 5 x 15 cm) , green half calfskin with corners (contemporary binding) , smooth spine decorated with blind-stamping, blind-stamped roulette borders, red speckled edges, 4-[2] -400-[10] pages. Rubbed corners, misaligned signatures, pp. 3-8 and one plate are partly detached. Good condition nonetheless. First edition illustrated by Thomas Rowlandson with an engraved title, 2 maps and 14 (of 15 engravings in colour) . Rowlandson was a famous Georgian cartoonist and artist, known for the political and social satire of his works. This book was initially published in the form of letters in the “Repository of Arts” between 1809 and 1813, under the title “Letters from Italy". This collection of twenty letters written during the author’s trip to Italy, in 1802 contains rich descriptions of landscapes and Italian society at the turn of the 19th century. Rare copy.
