Pennsylvania Coal Mining Nipper, 1911. Unsigned, inscribed on the verso. Gelatin silver print, 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 in. (11.5 x 16.5 cm), matted, unframed.
Condition: Scattered handling marks and creases, wear and minor losses to corners and edges.

N.B. Inscribed on the verso "Pennsylvania Coal. A lonely job. Waiting in the dark for a trip to come through. It was so damp that Willie said that he had to go to the doctor for his cough. A short distance from here the gas was pouring into the mine so rapidly that it made a great torch when the foreman lit it. Willie is 13 years old and has been working here 4 months—500 feet from the shaft, and 1/4 of a mile underground from there."
