Lienhart Astl (2. H.15. Jh - nach 1523) und Werkstatt zugeschrieben - Madonna mit Kind, Steiermark um 1510–20
the Virgin standing on a crescent moon, holding the Christ Child in her left hand and a sceptre in her right, carved limewood, hollowed out at the back, polychrome-painted, silvered and gilt, metal crowns dating from the 18th century, height with crown 131 cm, without crown 105 cm, polychromy with restoration, elements replaced, (MC)
Lienhart Astl was a sculptor who cannot be documented in archival sources and whose name is associated with a group of related Late Gothic works from Upper Austria and Styria. He presumably operated his workshop in Gmunden between 1505 and 1523; a carved inscription bearing his name is found on the winged altarpiece at Hallstatt. Our Madonna displays close affinities with the shrine figures of the altarpiece in the Chapel of St George near Rottenmann, c. 1520/25, which is attributed to him.
